Ways for the Nigerian Government to improve Our Power Supply and Performance at the Olympics

It is the duty of the Government to provide an enabling environment for Growth and Development. As the most Populous Black Nation in the World , a lot is expected from our Government. Power and Youth development are two important issues the Nigerian Government should address. In this article, we recommended a few ways for the Nigerian Government to improve our Power Supply and performance at the Olympics.

Power Supply

Although PHCN was unbundled into 18 companies, Nigerians are yet to reap the benefit of uninterrupted power supply. A lot of families use generators. I don't want to go into the consequence inadequate power supply or the Politics involved. I simply want to ask a these questions:
  1. Is this Power Issue beyond our Government?
  2. Are we unable to improve our power supply because of corruption?
  3. What is “Estimated Bill” and how do you calculate it?

I find it difficult to agree that corruption is the reason why we have not improved on our Power Supply. I know there must be one Good Man somewhere in this country that can handle this project. Secondly, Electrical Engineering programmes are approved in almost all Universities and Polytechnics in the Country. The Government can also think of partnering with some of these institutions to come up with a practical solution on this. If this option fails , then the Government can also pick a few bright students, sponsor them abroad to study how it is done in developed world. This will solve the problem in the long run.

We also need to know why the distribution companies have Unmetered Consumers. Sadly most of these Unmetered Consumers have applied for the so called “Pre Paid Meter online”. Just last week I received an outrageous bill. It is almost the cost of my monthly rent . On enquiry, I was simply told this “You do not have a Meter”. So how did they arrive at that cost? I think the distribution companies should enlighten us more on this “Estimated bill”. It increased by more than 100%. Yet the power supply did not improve.

I believe in this Country. I also believe the Government will tackle this issue urgently.

Olympic Performance

Urgent improvement is required in this area. Nigeria won 2 Gold medals 1 silver and 3 bronze medals at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. A total of 6 medals. We won 3 medals in 2000. In 2016, we won only on bronze medal. It is obvious there is a decline in this sector. The talents of our youths will be wasted if we do not revive this sector. We have lots of talented youths in this Country. We can pick these talents from our primary and secondary schools. At the state level, Sports Competitions should be organized. Names of outstanding athletics enrolled as a member of the State Sports athlete where a trainer/coach will be assigned to them to help them. A development plan should be put in place to also to bring these young athletes together at the state and the national level. The young athletes should also be exposed to visit their counterparts in other parts of the World. It could take up to 8 years or more before the impact will be felt. But this is a long term plan for us and we need to start now. As they saying goes “if you fail to prepare is plan you planned to fail”.

If the Government can execute this plan, it will improve our outings at the Summer Olympics.

We have recommended a few ways for the Nigerian Government to improve our Power Supply and performance at the Olympics. Let us know what you think on this issue.
